Behavior Under Cyclic Loading of Freshwater Ice and Sea Ice With Thermal Microcracks

چکیده
The combination of thinning ice, larger waves, and damage due to diurnal thermal cycling motivate the need better understand impact flexing under action oceanic waves on strength thermally cracked ice. To that end, new experiments were performed freshwater, lab-grown ice first-year natural sea Both materials by shocking then subsequently cyclically flexed. Initially, cracks weakened both materials. When either origin was flexed fully reversed loading, its flexural strength, initially reduced stress-concentrating cracks, recovered non-cracked, non-flexed non-reversely, only partially. During cyclic flexing, region experienced alternately compressive tensile stresses. We suggest compression resulted in contact opposing crack faces followed sintering leading recovery. non-reversed did not recover. tendency for heal during may lessen their threat structural integrity an cover.

Improving Multiyear Sea Ice Concentration Estimates with Sea Ice Drift
Multiyear ice (MYI) concentration can be retrieved from passive or active microwave remote sensing observations. One of the algorithms that combines both observations is the Environmental Canada Ice Concentration Extractor (ECICE). However, factors such as ridging, snow wetness and metamorphism can cause significant changes in brightness temperature and backscatter, leading to misidentification...
متن کاملNumerical and Experimental Study on Ratcheting Behavior of Plates with Circular Cutouts under Cyclic Axial Loading
In this paper, accumulation of plastic deformation of AISI 1045 steel plates with circular cutouts under cyclic axial loading is studied. Loading was applied under force-control conditions. Experimental tests were performed using a Zwick/Roell servo hydraulic machine. Under force-control loading with nonzero mean force, plastic strain was accumulated in continuous cycles called ratcheting. Nume...
متن کاملMassive phytoplankton blooms under Arctic sea ice.
Phytoplankton blooms over Arctic Ocean continental shelves are thought to be restricted to waters free of sea ice. Here, we document a massive phytoplankton bloom beneath fully consolidated pack ice far from the ice edge in the Chukchi Sea, where light transmission has increased in recent decades because of thinning ice cover and proliferation of melt ponds. The bloom was characterized by high ...
متن کاملRapid switch-like sea ice growth and land ice–sea ice hysteresis
[1] Rapid and extensive growth of sea ice cover was suggested to play a major role in the sea ice switch mechanism for the glacial cycles as well as on shorter millennial scales [Gildor and Tziperman, 2000]. This mechanism also predicts a hysteresis between sea ice and land ice, such that land ice grows when sea ice cover is small and withdraws when sea ice cover is more extensive. The switch-l...
متن کاملSubstructure Model for Concrete Behavior Simulation under Cyclic Multiaxial Loading
This paper proposes a framework for the constitutive model based on the semi-micromechanical aspects of plasticity, including damage progress for simulating behavior of concrete under multiaxial loading. This model is aimed to be used in plastic and fracture analysis of both regular and reinforced concrete structures, for the framework of sample plane crack approach. This model uses multilamina...
